Ponce de Leon Lighthouse
ponce inlet, fl
If you are visiting lighthouses, you won't want to miss this magnificent lighthouse, about six miles south of Daytona Beach!
One hundred and fifty-nine feet tall, she shows a flashing white light every ten seconds. The light is visible from seventeen miles to seaward! There is no horn.
Built in 1887, she replaced the original light that was built in 1835, but was severely damaged by a storm and finally fell into the sea.
During World War II, the Coast Guard took over the light and used the high tower to watch for enemy submarines that threatened our coastal waters.
There are many interesting stories in the log on display in the very interesting museum on the grounds.
In addition to the museum, there is a theater, Keeper's houses, a beautiful Fresnel lens and a fine gift shop.
