Old Field Lighthouse
East Setauket, ny
The original Old Field Lighthouse was built here in 1824 and a Mr. Edward Shoemaker was the first Keeper. The present lighthouse was built in 1869 to handle the increasing boat traffic on the north shore of Long Island.
This still very active aid to navigation is located about one mile west of the entrance to Port Jefferson Harbor and shows an alternating red and green flash every twenty-four seconds. The light tower is seventy-four feet above sea level and can be seen for fourteen miles.
The lighthouse is not open to the public -but they're working on it.
