Assateague Light

Chicoteague, va

This well-kept lighthouse was built in 1867...replacing a tower that was built in 1833.  Located in the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge - this is a very worthwhile place to visit....it is beautiful.

Identified by its two flashes every 5 seconds, she stands 154 feet above sea level and the light can be seen from 22 miles away.  In daylight, she is know by her red and white stripes. 

Discovered by Giovanni Verranzano in 1524, it wasn't until late in the 16th century that a settlements took roots with a handful of settlers...by the turn of the 20th century it had grown to about 200 people.  Most made their living from raising sheep and oystering. 
Wild horses still roam this island and it is a treat to see them in their wild habitat.

 It was a great place to have liberty!
